Alastair is a Clinical Advisor to our maternity investigation programme in addition to his role as Consultant Anaesthetist based at Good Hope Hospital, part of University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust.
He was appointed a Consultant Anaesthetist in 1999 and has an interest in anaesthesia for major colorectal and gynaecological surgery along with obstetrics. He has been involved in quality improvement work both locally and nationally with the NHS Modernisation Agency and the NHS Institute of Improvement and Innovation. He is a member of NHS England and Health Foundation Q Exchange.
His area of particular interest is human factors and ergonomics in healthcare which has led him into the world of incident investigation. He has a Postgraduate Certificate in Applied Ergonomics and Human Factors from the University of Nottingham and is an Associate Member of the Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors.
